Passage Of The Day

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.  Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it" -- when you have it with you.
Proverbs 3:28-29

Pretty in Pink - Philoptochos Outreach

October 31, 2011 - 12:39am - 1:39am
Raleigh NC

As women, we are concerned about breast cancer and probably know someone in our lives that has been touched by this dreaded disease. Pretty in Pink Foundation (PIPF) provides financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients with quality, life-saving medical treatment regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. PIPF, a not-for-profit organization is local in our area, but looks to expand to all counties in North Carolina. Holy Trinity Agape Chapter will again donate 10% of the net proceeds from our annual Preorder Bake Sale and Holiday Café to this very worthy cause.

This article appeared in PIPF’s 2011 summer issue newsletter, “Heart of the Matter.”

Loaves & Fishes Outreach Abounds

By Danielle Myers

Some women have eyes that shine. That passionate sparkle was ever-present in the eyes of Sydney Langford and Beba Zevgolis as they discussed their work with the Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The word Philoptochos means “friends of the poor,” and this organization lives up to that meaning. They provide help to many with great burdens from the poor, sick, aged, unemployed to anyone with significant need. The local organization is actually part of the larger Philoptochos which is national in its scope. There are nine Metropolises across the United States and Holy Trinity, part of the Atlanta Metropolis, is one of five hundred chapters with over thirty thousand members. Their local society is called the “agape” chapter; the Greek word for love. Ladies in this society love through service and philanthropy. Their ages span from the twenties to beyond one hundred!

The Agape ladies are able to choose the charities and organizations here in the Triangle that they wish to support. They are sure to be careful and wise about whom they choose. They do plenty of research to ensure causes are worthwhile and legitimate.

Beba and PIPF’s Bernadette Pickles met a few years ago. When Bernadette joined PIPF, Beba invited her to speak to the Agape chapter. Beba and Sydney said that Bernadette was marvelous and that the ladies in the group were moved to tears. This society made up of women was excited and proud to sponsor an organization that exists to serve local women. For two years in a row the group has selected PIPF as the beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from their annual December bake sale contributing $5000. This is no regular bak esale. Over a dozen ladies bake for two months in preparation for the event. Their glamorous red-headed ninety-plus-year-old chief baker leads the way.

They offer assortments of eight delicacies with names like pasta flora, finikia, koulourakia and the well-known baklava using family recipes that have been perfected over many years. Theirs is a labor of love deeply rooted in the desire to live out the words “friends of the poor” and they are doing so faithfully. Co-chairs Beba and Sydney are both hopeful that PIPF will be selected by the society as the recipient when the rolling pins and aprons are donned again this year.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Raleigh North Carolina has again selected PIP as this year's recipient of funds from their Annual Pre-Order Bake Sale and Annual Cafe.  If you are interested in seeing the forms they use for the Preorders and the menu of the Cafe contact the chapter directly.
